Vote for first MLive Saginaw Spring Sports Athlete of Week for 2022

The sun has returned, at least temporarily.

At least it came out long enough for Saginaw-area high school spring athletes to get a chance to compete as the 2022 high school spring sports season gets underway.

And while it may be early, some Saginaw-area athletes are putting together memorable performances, with coaches supplying information on their top players

Fans can choose their favorite for the MLive Saginaw Spring Sports Athlete of the Week honor for April 10-16. Fans can vote until 9 a.m. Friday, April 22.

Jaycey Herst, Bullock Creek

Bullock Creek posted a pair of girls soccer wins, beating Hemlock, 3-2, and Millington, 2-1. Jacey Herst scored two goals in the win over Hemlock, then added a goal and assist in the win over Millington.

Dylan Holmes, Millington

In a clash of Top 10 teams, Millington swept Essexville Garber with Dylan Holmes helping the Cardinals, ranked sixth in Division 3, to the sweep. In the first game, a 13-4 win, Holmes had two hits. In the second game, a 9-8 win, Holmes was 4-for-4 with two doubles, three RBIs and two runs. Holmes also hit the gamewinning homer to beat Garber, which is ranked fifth in Division 2.

Jake Kowalski, Freeland

Jake Kowalski did his part to help Freeland earn a Tri-Valley Conference East sweep of Alma. Kowalski had two hits and an RBI in a 13-0 win, then followed with a no-hitter in a 1-0 win. Kowalski struck out four and allowed no walks, hits or runs.

Levi Maier, Chesaning

Levi Maier, a junior, returns to lead a talented Chesaning boys track team. In the Freeland Invitational, Maier finished third in the 800-meter run and in the 1,600 run. He led the Indians to a championship in the St. Louis Invitational, taking first in the 800 and first in the 1,600, adding a leg on the first-place 1,600-meter relay team.

Tyler Sager, Chesaning

Tyler Sager recorded a school-record 20 strikeouts in Chesaning’s 8-0 baseball win over Ovid-Elsie. Sager allowed three hits and no walks in the win. Sager, who signed with Northwood University, also had two hits – a double and homer – with a walk, two RBIs and a run in the game. In the second game, a 14-4 Chesaning win, Sager had two hits with two RBIs, two runs scored and a walk.

Grace Schloop, Midland High

Midland High earned four wins, with Grace Schloop playing a major role in all four. She had two hits and an RBI in a 12-2 win over Alpena, then followed with a grand slam and four RBIs in a 7-0 win in the second game. She also threw a two-hit shutout in the second game. In a 22-5 win over Lapeer, Schloop had three hits, including a homer. She followed with a two-hitter in a 12-0 win in the second game against Lapeer. Schloop struck out eight and walked one.

Grace Sczepanski, Midland High

Grace Sczepanski scored a goal in Midland’s 8-0 win over Bay City Central, then followed with a hat trick to lead the Chemics to an 8-0 win over Saginaw.

Truk Terbush, Millington

Truk Terbush is only a freshman, but he has played a key role in Millington’s baseball success to start the 2022 season. Terbush had two hits and an RBI in an 8-3 loss to Nouvel before throwing a complete-game two-hitter in the second game, striking out 10 in a 3-0 win. He followed with a complete-game, five-inning shutout against Caro, striking out eight in the 11-0 win.

Maggie Thiel, Frankenmuth

Frankenmuth swept both opponents during the week, beating Swan Valley, 9-4 and 5-1, with Thiel getting three hits with two runs and a stolen base in the 5-1 win. The Eagles came back with 16-0 and 15-0 wins over Reese, with Thiel pitching both games. In seven innings, Thiel allowed one hit and struck out 15. She also had a double, three RBIs and two runs scored.

Two future U-M players face off in Frankenmuth and Swan Valley baseball game

Drew Titsworth, Frankenmuth

Frankenmuth junior Drew Titsworth, who has committed to Michigan, led the Eagles to a sweep of Swan Valley, 3-0 and 11-3. In the opener, Titsworth threw five innings, allowing three hits, no runs and no walks with 11 strikeouts. In the second game, Titsworth was 3-for-4 with three doubles and two runs scored.
