Group F: Morocco vs. Croatia

Date: Wednesday, Nov. 23 | Time: 5 a.m. ET | Location: Lusail Stadium — Lusail, Qatar

What to know: The outcome of this match should tell us who is one of the top candidates to go through past the group stage, with Belgium and Canada clashing later on the day. Croatia’s best-ever finish in the competition was in Russia four years ago when they made it all the way to the final, only to lose 4-2 to eventual champions France. Luka Modric, the heart and soul of that team, will likely begin his last World Cup campaign. You can bet he wants to leave his mark in

Most Improved Player odds: Best preseason bets on the NBA’s most flawed award

The NBA’s Most Improved Player Award is perhaps the league’s worst-named honor. Let’s take a gander at the numbers posted by the last six winners in the season prior to winning the award.

Aside from Siakam, the five other winners were already full-time starters that averaged 15 or more points per game before winning this award. Many of them fended off contenders with far more modest backgrounds. Jordan Poole finished fourth a year ago despite rising from G-Leaguer to third-leading scorer on the champion. Devonte’ Graham nearly quadrupled his scoring output a few years ago. It didn’t matter. This award doesn’t honor the player who improves most. It honors the player who improves in a very specific way.

In short, this is the first-time All-Star award. Of the 11 active players to have won it, nine did so in their first All-Star season, and a 10th, Goran Dragic, missed the All-Star Game only to earn an All-NBA selection months later. The only exception to this rule was CJ McCollum, and in fairness to him, here were the 2016 guards selected to the Western Conference All-Star Team: Stephen Curry, Russell Westbrook, James Harden, Chris Paul, Klay Thompson and Kobe Bryant. The first three were MVPs. The next two were All-Star staples. Bryant was a fan vote in his final season. There wasn’t exactly room for newcomers.

In a sense, that makes this a fairly simple award to bet on. Figure out who you think is ready to become a first-time All-Star and back that player. While this is hardly an exact science, there’s typically a fairly straightforward formula here:

  • Points and touches are the most important thing here. If a player finds himself on a new roster more willing to give him the ball, bet on him. If a player’s own

NFL Week 16 picks, odds: Rodgers makes MVP statement on Christmas, Patriots hand Bills another bitter defeat

Week 15 is up there in terms of the most insanely bizarre NFL weeks I’ve ever seen. Obviously having two games Monday and two games Tuesday is a good start to that,

The Texans scored 30 points in a cakewalk victory, the Lions beat the Cardinals and Tom Brady scored zero points in a home, prime-time loss. It was a weird week all around, fittingly coming in the longest week in NFL history.

Hopefully everyone can have a winning and happy Christmas, and in the spirit of Christmas miracles, I’m going to write up fewer of these picks and toss some scores for meaningless games at the bottom.

My ATS record against the spread this year is just awful, but 9-5 last week is strong. A strong close to the season can salvage this year ATS so let’s get hot over the holidays.

Tennessee Titans
+3.5

Week 15 featured plenty of underdogs barking loudly, so I’m a little hesitant to jump onto a road favorite on a short week. But the 49ers are starting to cook. Deebo Samuel appears to be the catalyst for this run game, with his presence in the backfield wrecking havoc on opposing defenses. Kyle Shanahan’s playcalling has been outstanding and the Niners appear to have a pretty good stable of backs capable of producing on a weekly basis — with Elijah Mitchell out, Jeff Wilson stepped up nicely against the Falcons. Tennessee has been good against the run this season but the 49ers should be able to stretch them horizontally. The one thing I’d be wary of if you’re backing Jimmy Garoppolo and Co.

Not only are Juventus the only side in UEFA Champions League Team H to conquer Chelsea or acquire a position off the defending European champions, but they are the only facet to so much as score a target versus Thomas Tuchel’s facet. Juventus, on the other hand, have conceded — gasp — two aims through the team phase, but Massimiliano Allegri’s guys are two-thirds of the way to a best run via the group. Current: Falcons -3, O/U 46.5

“This pick is more about fading the Panthers than it is riding the Falcons. Sam Darnold is flailing under center for Carolina and it’s hard to watch. He even got benched in the fourth quarter last week during the Panthers’ 25-3 loss to the New York Giants. I don’t think he’s going to be able to rebound. I was optimistic about Darnold coming to Carolina, and thought he could pull a “Ryan Tannehill.” Seven weeks in, and I’m out. It’s not all his fault, as the offensive line is atrocious. The offensive struggles have also negatively affected the defense. In Weeks 1-3, the Panthers ranked
