Jerry Jones says Dan Quinn ‘would love’ Cowboys’ head coaching job, adds Mike McCarthy will be gone ‘someday’

Dan Quinn had multiple opportunities to potentially become an NFL head coach again this offseason before returning to the Cowboys as the team’s defensive coordinator. That’s partly because there’s a good chance he’ll soon be the Cowboys’ head coach. Or at least that’s what team owner Jerry Jones strongly suggested while addressing reporters this week, saying Quinn would “love” the job and is qualified for it, while acknowledging that current coach Mike McCarthy won’t always hold the post.

McCarthy, who just finished his second season on the job, received assurances in January that he’d remain the coach for the 2022 season, according to CBS Sports’ Patrik Walker, albeit with expectations of a deeper playoff run next year. Jones, meanwhile, has been a bit less publicly committal than CEO Stephen Jones, and his comments this week were another reminder. Calling Quinn’s return to the defensive coordinator job “a major coup,” the owner said he wanted other teams interested in Quinn “to be thinking that they were talking to a guy who could be head coach of the Cowboys.”

Jones, of course, acknowledged that McCarthy is the guy for now, and that he’s comfortable with the former Packers coach entering 2022 atop the staff. But he repeatedly left the door open for Quinn, the ex-Falcons head coach, to take over. His first hint came when referencing Quinn alongside former assistants Jason Garrett and Sean Payton, who were once also sought by other teams as potential head coaches.

“(Quinn) stays here because … every one of those three coaches have said they’d love to be the head coach of the Cowboys,” Jones

Prisco’s NFL picks for wild-card round: Bills roll over Patriots in AFC East rubber match, 49ers upset Cowboys

Like some of the NFL teams did with their players, I rested last week. That awful showing you saw with my picks came from my backup. It wasn’t me. Blame the backup. He was terrible. I was getting ready for the postseason.

OK. It was me. I played, and I got abused. LOOOOOOSER.

That certainly is not the week I wanted heading into the playoffs. I went 7-9 ATS, 8-8 straight up and 2-4 with my Best Bets as part of the Pick Six Podcast. That brings my season records to 144-125-3 ATS, 168-103-1 straight up and 59-54 with my Best Bets.

I do like the Super Wild Card Weekend games this week, so I am getting back on track.

My backup did a terrible job last week when I sat out, so I am ready to go.

Bring on the playoffs.

Cincinnati Bengals
-5.5

The Raiders got into the playoffs by beating the Chargers on Sunday night, while the Bengals are coming off a loss where they rested most of their top players. That’s an edge to the Bengals. Cincinnati has an explosive offense, but the Raiders counter with a wicked pass rush. This will be decided by how well the Bengals can protect Joe Burrow. I think they do it well enough to win the game, but it will be close. The Bengals win their first playoff game since the 1990 season.

Pick: Bengals 27, Raiders 24

Latest Odds:

Buffalo Bills

This is the third game featuring these two this season, with each winning on the other’s field. New England won the first meeting in a wind storm in early December, while the Bills dominated the Pats at their place in late December.

NFL Week 18 Power Rankings: Titans will be tough out, especially with Derrick Henry returning; Cowboys plummet

In mid-November, the Tennessee Titans were 8-2 and were the top seed in the AFC. They looked to be on their way to earning that spot, despite having lost running back Derrick Henry in late October.

But then things went bad. They lost three of four games, including a bad home loss to the Houston Texans and a blowout at the hands of the New England Patriots. Things looked bleak as their playoff hopes were being jeopardized and the No. 1 seed seemed like a real long shot.

Fast forward to today. The Titans are currently the top seed in the AFC and need only to beat the Texans this week in Houston to claim that and get the first-round playoff bye. If they do get the extra week, there is a great chance they could have Henry back for the playoffs. (He returned to practice Wednesday.)

The Titans regrouped the past two weeks to beat the San Francisco 49ers at home and the Miami Dolphins this past Sunday. Their toughness was on display in both games, which we’ve come to expect from this team.

They’ve taken on the mentality of coach Mike Vrabel, who just might be the Coach of the Year. They will play tough, physical defense and pound the football. They’ve navigated through the Henry injury, several others on the offensive line and their receiving group has been in and out all year. They’ve played so many players this year you can hardly keep track.

There are still doubts as to whether the Titans can pass the football well enough in the playoffs to win it all. Ryan Tannehill can be streaky, but if the run game works he is more than capable of leading them to a Super Bowl.

The Titans are sixth in
